Sevilla are the "Special One" of the Europa League!

The Spanish team won their seventh title, winning 4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw during regular time.

It was a night that highlighted many of the problems of modern football, even the decision on the penalty not awarded to Sevilla caused a backlash, but even the penalty shootout as Gonzalo Modiel scored at the second attempt with the help of VAR and gave the title to Sevilla for the seventh time, setting a new record.

Roma were outraged by several of the decisions and we will surely hear more about this in the future from their manager. Specifically, the Portuguese coach said the following about the referee:

It was an intense, masculine game, with a referee who looked Spanish. It was yellow, yellow, the whole time. The injustice is shown by the fact that Erik Lamela should have received a second yellow card and did not conceded. He also took a penalty. Let's hope Taylor only blows the whistle in the Champions League and does the same crap there as he did tonight, and not in the Europa League.

However, neither he nor his players could have any valid complaints about the 4-1 penalty shootout, considering the part they played in a 1-1 draw that for a long time felt like an endless advertisement for anti- football.

There was an exception for Paulo Dybala, who opened the scoring but broke down in tears at the end of the match. However, even the Argentine was embroiled in the ugly arguments on the bench that overshadowed what happened on the pitch.

When the dust settles after a final that featured 13 yellow cards, there will only be respect for Sevilla, who needed a Gianluca Mancini own goal to go to extra time but deservedly won in the end because of their willingness to play aggressively against the her opponents.

In contrast, Roma will regret it bitterly after missing their best chances throughout the 120 minutes, with Tammy Abraham and Andrea Belotti missing excellent opportunities.

Worse still, Roma fans will now be worried about the future of Mourinho, who looks set to leave the club this summer despite guiding the Giallorossi to two consecutive UEFA finals.

On the pitch...

The Andalusians "went down" with Youssef en Nesiri at the top of their attack and Lucas Ocampos and Brian Hill on the wings. The Romans had Tammy Abraham in attack alongside Dybala (who was only fit for 30 minutes as Mourinho claimed) and Lorenzo Pellegrini.

The first few minutes of the match were effective warnings of what was to come. There were intense duels leading to injuries, few successful passes and little control from either team, resulting in a lack of rapprochement in both areas.

An exception was anything that sprung from Dybala's imagination, as it was at his feet that the first good moment of the game was registered, with a Leonardo Spinazzola shot from inside the area saved by Yassin Bounu in the 12th minute.

Jose Luis Madrid's players needed to regain their composure and by the time they did, they found themselves behind on the scoreboard. In the 33rd minute, the "Giallorossi" called for a penalty for a foul on Nemanja Gudel near Abraham's head. The phase was controlled, the game continued, but Ivan Rakitic was not focused. He lost the ball in the center of the pitch which went to Gianluca Mancini who advanced it to Dybala who made it 1-0 in the 35th minute.

The goal had all of Roma looking to defend their lead, while Sevilla responded first with a header from Fernando that went wide and in (many injury-related) stoppage time a long-range shot from Rakitic hit the post.

At half-time, Madrid made changes to his team, bringing on Suso and Erik Lamela for the invisible Oliver Torres and Brian Hill, while Mourinho put his faith in the starting line-up.

In the second half, the ball was constantly at the feet of the Andalusians, while the Romans pressed all over the field, looking for the opponent. A shot from the unbeaten Alex Telles was a warning from Sevilla and in the 55th minute, after a cross from 37-year-old Jesus Navas, Mancini, from creator, was unlucky to score an own goal to level the score at 1-1.

Counted chances from Roma

Roma's initial reaction was to stay in their area and defend. Mourinho made no changes and Sevilla had the lead to score the second goal. However, she lacked creativity and did not take advantage of opportunities.

Dybala was replaced by Georginio Wijnaldum in the 68th minute, and shortly afterwards Mourinho made another change, bringing on Andrea Belotti for Abraham. The Giallorossi realized they were unlucky to be so close to Rui Patricio's goal, and when they did attack, they had an incredible chance with a curling shot that was saved by Bunu.

Both teams called for a penalty, with Sevilla awarded one, but VAR corrected the referee's error, disallowing Lucas Ocampos' fall in the area. This was followed by a submission by Fernando, which the referee and VAR ruled as not a foul, resulting in both teams protesting.

Roma had the final say on the winning goal as a Belotti duel with the ball that ended up wide was the biggest moment for either side before the game went into extra time.

As if there was no overtime

The fatigue of both teams was evident in overtime. Telles lasted just five minutes before being replaced by Karim Rekic, while Montiel also entered the game. And Mourinho made changes, with Zeki Celik replaced by Nikola Zalewski.

The latter part of overtime and the match was even more demanding, with many injuries, frequent stoppages and increased tension on the benches. In the end, the game lasted 145 minutes until it reached the penalty shootout.

In the penalty shootout, Sevilla prevailed again, with Bunu saving Mancini and Ibáñez, and Montiel taking the fourth penalty to score, despite initially being beaten by Rui Patricio and the post. This win gives Sevilla qualification for the next Champions League groups, while Roma will have to fight for their place in the next Europa League.
